Welcome to The Rotary Club of Renfrew, Scotland
My hopes for 2010/2011:
The Club
Our Rotary family in Renfrew has had a fantastic boost over the last two years in that a Roteract Club (18 to 30 age group) was established in 2008, and last year under Past president Gary’s careful nurturing an Interact club (12 to 18 age group). In this vein I’d like to see the parent club add to the existing 36 members, and I hope to encourage membership initiatives.
The regular Rotary International charities such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Challenge focusing on the End Polio Now Campaign, Shelterbox and various other Global concerns, will be supported as normal. We will continue supporting local, and other Scottish charities such as PoppyScotland, Erskine Hospital, Enable, Capability Scotland, Accord Hospice to name but a few.
Personally, I would also like to give some support to a couple of charities which are personal to me, Motor Neurone Disease Scotland, and the Trossachs Search and Rescue dog unit.
Social
There will be more than a few social functions and activities over and above our normal social functions. There are plans for a tribute to Robert W. Service - the Scottish Poet, a repeat of last years Jazz Night, Curry Night, a wine tasting evening. Visits are to be organised to local places of interest for the club, friends and supporters to enjoy. We are hoping to repeat our popular visit to the Air Traffic control at Glasgow Airport. Last year our Area winners of the Primary 7 quiz, was Arkleston Primary School, who represented Renfrew in the District finals competing against more than 20 schools.
Sports
During the course of the Rotary year we have regular sporting interludes with internal club competitions and inter club competitions. These activities include bowls, snooker, 10 pin bowling, golf and even Clay pigeon shooting. There is an active hill walking group that have completed the 3 peaks challenge for Sight Savers International, the West Highland Way for CHAS, a 5 day Trek in Gran Canaria for PolioPlus, A weekend trek in Jura this year for the Accord Hospice. We organise training walks through the year to keep the ramblers at peak fitness.
Why Rotary?
Rotarians are all volunteers who wish to make a charitable impact on their local communities and specific Global projects. We are non political, non religious and open to all cultures, races and creeds. The main objective of Rotary is service in the community and throughout the world. We give time, raise funds and ensure those funds go where the need is greatest, whether at home or abroad. A registered charity, we have no overheads: every penny of the money we raise goes to the people we support. We build goodwill and peace and encourage high ethical standards in all vocations. The club membership represents a cross section of local business and professional people. With 1.2 million members, just like you, worldwide and a seat at the United Nations, we can talk to the world's governments and be trusted, respected and encouraged. I hear people dismiss Rotary as being elitist and”Only for business men and retirees” - not in the slightest, Come along and see the club in action at one of our meetings. You never know.
