Bruce's Golfing Buddies

Renfrew Rotary were well represented in two recent golf tournaments. Firstly the Scottish RIBI competition was held on the magnificent Carnoustie links on 4th May. Peter Shea, Alex Burgoyne and Bruce Harley enjoyed a reasonable day and came in a creditable 3rd place with 93 points, only one point off the winning team and pushed into third by a dubious scoring system!

On 9th June Renfrew participated in the annual Willie Stott and Coronation Trophy run by district at Buchanan Castle Golf Club. On a perfect day for golf the sun shone on the picturesque surrounding of Buchanan Castle and Renfrew's team of six, Peter (OK) O'Keefe, Iain (oh blimey) Balfour, Alex (soft hands) Burgoyne, Peter (boom boom) Shea, Bruce (hot head) Harley and special guest Mario (mad man) Caroppo, did just enough to stay out of the prizes and allowed the East Kilbride club the honour of picking up the main prize.

Adam’s World Challenge Expedition
In June 2011, former Interact President Adam Louttit will travel, along with 14 other pupils and 2 teachers from Renfrew High School, to Kerala in Southern India for a 3 week expedition called World Challenge, which will include trekking, sightseeing and some hands on hard graft to help build an extension to a local school. Rotarians from our Club have helped Adam with his fundraising efforts to raise over £3,000 for the trip. In addition to the voluntary aspect of the expedition, the project aims to promote skills such as leadership, self-motivation, communication, confidence and consideration for others. We wish Adam well in his efforts. Pictures of one of the fundraising Curry & Race at Mister Singh's.

Hand-over evening - 80 guests
On Tuesday 29 June the Club welcomed a total of 80 guests to our first 'Triple' Handover Dinner, to recognise the handovers from Presidents to President's Elect for the Rotary, Rotaract and Interact Clubs of Renfrew.
District Governor Andy Slater and his wife Eilen also attended the dinner, in addition to many invited guests from some of the charities we've supported throughout the year.
Firstly, outgoing President Adam Louttit handed over the presidency of the Interact Club to new President Erin O'Neill, then Shona Stewart handed over to new Rotaract President Louise Winch and finally Rotary Club President Gary Louttit handed over the chain to new President John Stuart.
Certificates were awarded to various Club members for their efforts in the past year to include Mac de Souza, Jim Naismith, Jack Winch, Eddie Williams and John Stuart, while an Award was also made to Peter Beagley of Brahead Shopping Centre to recognise the level of support given to the Club by Braehead.
Also on the evening, a number of cheques were presented including cheques for £750 to Prostate Cancer and Alzheimer Scotland, £250 to Enable, and £500 to each of the 4 local primary schools.

  1 Trek, 6 club members, 1 wife, 2 sons and £2,000
Six hardy Club members, accompanied by one wife and two sons, spent the weekend of 16-18 April trudging across the marshes and the Paps of Jura, to raise funds for Accord Hospice. Our team of 9 was part of a group of 32 walkers and a group of guides, all of whom had a fantastic time camping over 2 nights and walking through sun, wind and rain. Highlights were the campfire party, 12 people in the President’s 3 man tent (having another party) and the tour of the Jura Distillery. The Rotary Club of Renfrew Group raised over £2,000 for the Hospice.
